Abstract:

Implant-supported overdentures and partial removable prostheses therapy in the rehabilitation of the completely edentulous jaws is evidenced as a highly successful treatment protocol. The success of this protocol depends on certain factors which influence the treatment plan such as, the patient’s age, manual dexterity, general health, cognitive- and functional- statuses, as well as the socio-economic context. Further aspects to consider in terms of a geriatric perspective must include the patients’ possible dependency in later life. Implant configuration must take into consideration the jaw being rehabilitated, implant number, implant type, the ideal retentive element (attachments) as well as the loading protocols. The prosthetic design must allow easy cleansing, enhance function, and deliver optimal esthetics. The retentive elements employed should be easy to handle, both by the clinician as well as by the patient and the caregiver. This lecture aims to provide an overview of implant supported removable protheses therapy in the fully-and partially edentulous adults.
